Today, a parent attending our support group needed some EXTRA help! As we ended the meeting and walked out to the parking lot, there was a very obvious flat tire on one of the cars. One of our parents, multi-talented Debbie Ocanas, had no fear as she helped take off the flat tire and put on the spare.

That's what we are here for . . . to help each other, even in some unexpected ways. Kudos to Debbie!

Hannah's Hope celebrated Halloween with a most interesting fundraiser! Tommy and Marsha Coulter traveled to Austin where a show featuring several of Austin's local Rock-a-Billy bands performed to raise money for Hannah's Hope. Neil Curran, lead singer of the group, The Score, has made autism his cause and put the whole thing together along with friends and colleagues.

It was a really fun evening with GREAT music and alot of very nice and generous people. Neil is planning an even bigger and better event for next year! We'll keep you posted!

Students have been working with Ms. DeeAnna to make scarecrows this month. Parents were asked to send clothes and LOTS of newspapers! They made paper mache heads and stuffed the clothes with the newspapers. Some of the kids are able to recognize the scarecrow they made and they love looking at them as they walk to their classroom upstairs.

Snack time is more than just eating a snack. Students have to wash and dry hands, request what snack they want, practice opening baggies, wait their turn, and clean up. the teachers make every part of the day a learning opportunity.

Each student gets to have some "sensory time" before they begin working on skills in the gross motor room. They all seem to enjoy having their feet rubbed with lotion. Other sensory activities include brushing, using weighted blankets, and joint compression. It's a good way to get the day started!

Horse Therapy is more than just riding a horse. First, the kids get to spend some time with a smaller animal, such as a dog. They can pet it, brush it and take it on a walk. THEN, we move up to a larger animal, the horse. Again, the kids have time to pet it, brush it, and eventually, sit on it and take a ride!

A unique aspect of Hannah's Hope is the ability to individualize each student's program. Sensory issues can be dealt with and incorporated into the program. Many individuals with autism have heightened senses and are more sensitive to touch, sound, smell, taste and sight. Because of this, they either crave an activity that will stimulate a particular sense or they want to avoid a certain sense being stimulated.

Exposing children to using their senses appropriately can reduce the sensitivity or stimulation from a particular sense.

WOW! The students were suprised with a very special treat today! KJM Commercial donated Buc Days Rodeo tickets to all of our families AND Build-A-Bear Workshop gave a bear to each student!

Hannah's Hope hosted an Open House on Thursday, April 19th. This was our way to say "thank you" to the community that has supported us.

Everyone seemed to have a good time touring the facilities, especially the newly remodeled upstairs classroom. Brian Carson provided a wonderful array of culinary treats and wine was donated by Les and Tracey Cassidy.

Ms. Tammy, our physical therapist, not only works with children in regards to their gross motor skills, but also, each child's individual self-help needs. Despite the cold and windy weather, alot of people supporting autism turned out for Corpus Christi's First Autism Walk hosted by Coastal Bend Autism Advocacy.

Supporters included parents, teachers, members of the community and even State Representative, Juan Garcia. What a great way to kick off Autism Awareness Month!

Gregory Portland FCA Raises Money For Hannah's Hope

Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Gregory-Portland High School hosted their annual MACHO MAN volleyball game. Junior and Senior boys played against each other while raising money for Hannah's Hope. This year, the Juniors ended up with the "bragging rights" by defeating the Seniors!

A "chinese auction" was held which gave the lucky winners an opportunity to throw a pie in a teacher's face. What student could resist that? Mrs Armentor, Mr. Smith, Mrs. Teal and Coach Harrison--you were all good sports! How WAS that pie, anyway?

Before Spring Break, the students at Hannah's Hope were treated to a morning of horseback riding. The kids got to pet and brush the horses before actually riding them.

While Ms. Hannah liked being on the horse, it was difficult for her to wear the riding cap, she didn't get to ride very long!

After being at our current location for nearly two years, it was decided that we needed to identify ourselves to the community. Until recently, we had to tell people to look for the "white house with the red trim on the corner of Twigg and Chaparral". We not only have our logo painted on the back and side fences thanks to the artistic talents of Allen Wahlstrom, but also, NameStoreUSA donated a sign for us to put on our front gate. NOW, everyone will know who we are and it will be a little bit easier to give directions!

Recently, Fire Station 1 invited our students to come for a visit. WOW, was it exciting! The kids got to wear REAL firefighter's jackets, sit in the fire truck and even spray the hose.

We appreciate our firefighters and all they do for our community. They keep us safe through education and risk their lives to protect us during a fire.

Fisher's of Family Fixes the Roof

Fisher's of Family Lutheran Church in Portland rounded up members of their church and the "SNL" (Sunday NIght Live) group to have a "work day" at Hannah's Hope. Elbert, Debbie, Ethan and Hannah Ocanas were the subject of an in-depth article about living with autism featured in a free local publication called Corpus Beat. Hannah is one of our students. Along with the article written about the Ocanas family, are other articles written about autism and its cost. Corpus Beat also included an interview with Mark Christoph, founder of CBAA (Coastal Bend Autism Advocacy).

Homes Tour Raises Over $7,100

St. Christopher's held a homes tour in December with proceeds going to Hannah's Hope. It was announced today that the event raised over $7,100! Hannah's Hope is a non-profit, tax exempt organization and we are dependent on support for the community. Our goal is to keep tuition as low as possible while providing the best instruction for all of our students. We could not do this without you!

Gateway Church in Gregory invited Hannah's Hope to put up a tree in their auditorium for the Christmas holidays. The kids and teachers worked for a week making decorations with puzzle pieces. As a treat, the kids got to go to the church to decorate the tree and then it was off to McDonald's for lunch.

Getting in those last minute bids!

Once again, St. Christopher's by the Sea Episcopal Church in Portland hosted their annual Christmas Homes Tour benefitting Hannah's Hope.

There were several beautifully decorated homes on the tour this year. At the church there were goodies to eat, a silent auction, a bake shop, and a chinese auction. What a great way to kick off the holiday season!

We are grateful for all of the hard work from the members of St. Christopher's in putting on this event.

Corpus Christi Town Club Helps Hannah's Hope

The Corpus Christi Town Club has asked the students at Hannah's Hope to set up a Christmas display in order to promote autism awareness. This will also enable us to seek donations from Town Club members and their visitors. Our teachers and students are busy making puzzle shaped ornaments which is the international symbol for autism.

We appreciate the Town Club giving us this opportunity during the holiday season.

Michael Cassidy, the first "graduate" of Hannah's Hope, spent the day with us. He is now in a regular classroom in the Corpus Christi Independent School District. His school had the whole week off for Thanksgiving which gave him an opportunity to come see us. I know all of his "buddies" were glad to see him!

Our students visited the Pumpkin Patch today where they heard stories, listened to music and got to pick pumpkins. Unfortunately, pumkins were slim this year, so they didn't have a whole lot to choose from. Still, it was fun for each of them to get to hand pick their own pumpkin.

"Face Painting" can be quite a challenge for some children with autism who have sensory defensiveness. While most of the students were able to tolerate it, Ms. Renee had to get a little creative with others. A couple of them ended up with "pumpkins" on their hands instead. AND still others had rubbed it all off within minutes! I have to give each child credit for giving it a try.

Upstairs Renovations are Completed!

Thanks to Les Cassidy, Hannah's Hope now has "learning space" upstairs! Mr. Cassidy provided the funding to pay for renovations. This has also allowed our program manager and teachers to have some much needed office space. We are now able to accept more students, as well. One way to teach dressing skills is by allowing children to dress up in costumes. They are having fun and learning at the same time. Hannah's Hope is accepting donations of costumes and regular clothing items, especially those with buttons, snaps and zippers.

At the Valero Texas Open at La Cantera in San Antonio, Paul Azinger was the pro golfer chosen to play for Hannah's Hope. Although he wasn't the big winner, we were able to raise over $2,000 through Birdies for Charity which was a part of the Texas Open. Thank you, Valero, for giving us a great fund-raising opportunity! We look forward to raising even more funds next year.

At Hannah's Hope, every day self help skills are emphasized throughout the day. Many children with ASD have to be taught skills step by step in order to learn how to do it independently. Parents are encouraged to let staff know specific skills they would like to be addressed with their children.

The upstairs is currently being remodeled to accommodate our growth. We are all looking forward to a successful school year.

Some of the youth from Gateway church in Gregory paid a visit to the kids at Hannah's Hope. Everyone was supposed to participate in Splash Day, but the weather did not cooperate. After months of no rain, it rained TODAY! Although, no one was able to play outside, everyone seemed to enjoy the motor room, group room and bounce house that was set up inside.

Shaving cream and silly string!

The kids from Hannah's Hope had a special treat today as they all went outside to see a large blue tarp on the ground outside. No one knew how much fun was in store until the teachers brought out the shaving cream and silly string! They all seemed to enjoy rubbing it on themselves, the tarp, and the teachers! Clean up was fun, too as it was the perfect opportunity to play with the water hose. FUN!

Anna Adame, a recent graduate of Corpus Christi A & M has joined our team of teachers for the summer. Anna comes with lots of professional training and hands-on experience as she has worked with several families who have "in home" programs.

As you can see, Anna isn't afraid to get right in there with the kids and have a good time. We are so glad to have her for the summer program.

Staff, students and parents all drove over the bridge to swim at Jim and Sue West's indoor swimming pool. EVERYONE had a great time. After all the splashing the kids were able to eat lunch on the deck. We'll be back in the pool during the summer session!

Junior Cotillion Surprises Hannah's Hope

The Junior Cotillion of Corpus Christi surpised Hannah's Hope with a very generous donation of $2100.00! Robin Blue and Marsha Coulter attended the organization's end of year luncheon at the home of one of its members. During the luncheon, Ms. Blue was given an opportunity to explain the program and answer questions. Ms. Coulter gave a parent's perspective of how important the school has been to her daughter and family. The money received will go towards the purchase of new equipment and materials needed for the upcoming summer program.

WOW! What a great turn out we had for our first Open House. It was a great opportunity for us to thank all our supporters from the Coastal Bend. We could not have had such a successful year without the constant support we received from so many individuals and organizations.

First Baptist Church in Portland hosted a Barbeque and Spring Fling with part of the proceeds from this event going to Hannah's Hope. The Spring Fling included lots of fun activites and games for the children, hot dogs and drinks, and a wonderful silent auction.

2 CD set for sale benefitting our scholarship fund

Our program manager, Robin Blue, is a very talented musical artist. She has recently recorded some songs from her "previous life" in Nashville. This collection is a mix of country, christian and jazz. The proceeds will benefit our scholarship fund.

Also available during the month of April is a single CD with a song Robin wrote to honor children with autism titled, The Hope in Hannah's Eyes. And we have autism awareness charm bracelets for sale, as well.

No foolin', the men from the Gateway Church in Gregory were up bright and early to paint the fence at Hannah's Hope. They did an awesome job!

One of the men painting, Lupe, is actually blind. The other men would let him know how many times he could roll the paint on before he needed more.

We REALLY appreciate the hard work. It looks So much better!

What a great day we had! Nearly 20 teams participated in our first annual "Autism Awareness" golf tournament. There were some terrific live and silent auction items, as well as, a brand new BMW on the 13th hole! Sorry to report there was not a single hole in one on that particular hole. Maybe next year. . .

Hannah's Hope is grateful for all of the hard work put in by the organizers of this event. We would also like to thank the many sponsors and contributors. We couldn't have done it without you! Although, we don't have all of the figures, it looks like we may have raised over $20,000! This money will help provide program equipment and much needed funds for scholarships.

Proclamation from the City of Corpus Christi

On Tuesday, March 28th, the mayor's office from Corpus Christi officially proclaimed March 31st as Autism Awareness Day.

The proclamation urges citizens to push for greater understanding and significant increase in funding for education and research so goals can be reached in treating and curing autism and spread the message of hope for our children and future generations.

Tammy Turner and Dr. Jennifer Turner were instrumental in contacting the mayor's office and providing the needed information to declare a proclamation. Thanks Tammy and Jennifer for helping us get the word out!

"Reaching for the Stars" Golf Tournament

Plans for the first annual Autism Awareness Golf Tournament are well under way. Along with the tournament will be a silent/live auction and a reception featuring awards, entertainment and food. Our theme for this year is "Reaching for the Stars".

The golf tournament will start with registration and lunch from 11-12:30. There will be a "shotgun start" at 1:00. The silent auction begins at 12:00 and will end at 5:oo with the live auction beginning at 6:00. Please make plans to attend!

Like any child, our children with autism LOVE to play outside. This is a good time to incorporate activities that will stimulate the vestibular system such as swinging, spinning and jumping on the trampoline. The teachers seem to enjoy this time, as well. Our students go outside every day, weather permitting. On rainy or cold days, we blow up the Bounce House and have fun INSIDE!

Autism Awareness Golf Tournament

Real Life Academy will be hosting a golf tournament to promote autism awareness. The tournament is scheduled for March 31st at NorthShore Country Club in Portland. The proceeds from this event will be used to buy therapy equipment and provide scholarships for Hannah's Hope summer and fall programs.

On February 23rd and 24th, Kelle Wood, Director of the Central Texas Autism Center in Austin, presented a workshop on autism at the Region 2 ESC. Teachers, administrators, doctors and parents were in attendance for this very informative workshop.

Kelle gave detailed information on how to implement effective teaching procedures in classroom settings that can also be adapted for use by parents in the home. She also addressed many of the behavior issues exhibited by children with autism and how to effectively manage these behaviors.

Special thanks goes to our Educational Service Center for helping us to bring Kelle to Corpus Christi to present this workshop.

FCA Visits Hannah's Hope

Officers from the Gregory-Portland Fellowship of Christian Athletes visited Hannah's Hope. This organization will be hosting a Macho Man Volleyball game to benefit our learning center. This event will be held at theG-P High School gym. The cost is $2.00 for adults and $1.00 for students.

It is encouraging to see young people taking an interest in helping children with autism. A couple of the officers even inquired about volunteering during the summer. We all enjoyed your visit, G-P FCA!

Fine Motor Fun

During fine motor, students are given an opportunity to strenghten their fine motor and self help skills. Teachers use puzzles, stringing beads, stacking activities and much more to improve eye hand coordination. Self help skills that are addressed include tying shoes, brushing hair and other dressing skills. This is also a good time to work on sensory "issues" by manipulating clay, playing with textured balls, shaving cream, and using a variety of tactile activities.

Hannah's Hope Goes to Cole Park

Ms. Robin decided it had been awhile since the students had been on a field trip. They all decided to take advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and go to Cole Park. The kids had a blast and the teachers all got a good workout keeping up with them. The field trips are a nice break from the daily routine while still providing an opportunity to learn in the natural enviornment.

Homes Tour Raises Alot of Money!

Back in December, St. Chrisopher's by the Sea Episcopal church had a Christmas Homes Tour and silent auction to raise money for Hannah's Hope. On Sunday, February 5th, we were presented with a check for $7200! All I can say is. . .WOW! We never expected to receive so much.

We are grateful for the donation which will help us extend services to other families in the Coastal Bend area. So much work went into putting on the Homes Tour. We just can't say "thank you" enough.

The best thing is the willingness of the community of Portland partnering with the staff and parents of Hannah's Hope to provide for these very special children. There were many people involved in putting on this event. Of course, most of the work was done by members of St. Christopher's, but I would also like to thank Gateway church for their participation. Thank you, Penny Hattersley and your "team" for all the wonderful fruits and vegetables and for your eagerness to help out in the kitchen. Thanks to all the homeowners so willing to open their beautiful homes up for us to tour. And thanks to all of the businesses and individuals donating items for the silent auction.

Like I have said before, even more than the money, is the fact that our community cares about these children with autism. I know that brings encouragement to every parent living with autism. Thank you.

Students from St. James Visit Hannah's Hope

On Tuesday, January 17th our students were surprised with some very special visitors. This year, in celebration of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, St. James Episcopal School in Corpus Christi took us on as their service project. Students from the four and five year old classes came to Hannah's Hope and brought TONS of supplies, toys and other requested items. Once again, the community has reached out to our children.

It was also a good experience for our children to be around neuro-typical children. I hope we can get together again. A BIG "thank you" to St. James from all the staff and students at Hannah's Hope.

Autism Workshop in February

Real Life Academy along with ESC Region 2 will be sponsoring a workshop by Kelle Wood. Ms. Wood is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and director of Central Texas Autism Center in Austin. The workshop is a follow-up to Dr. Mark Sundberg's workshop which was held in October. It will be held at the ESC on February 23rd and 24th. The cost is $100. Ah. . .the christmas break was nice, but it seems like teachers and students were ready to get back to school as we just completed the first week of the new semester. Our consultant, Jesse Franco, came to see us on Friday. As always, she had tons of good ideas to help us improve our program. Recently, we were notified by Valero that "Hannah's Hope" would be receiving part of the money raised in their annual benefit golf tournament.

Board members Lisa Marti, Tommy Coulter, Julie Dearing and Barbara Zemo attended the check presentation along with Program Manager and Lead Teacher, Robin Blue.

This money has been designated to use for repair work on the outside of Hannah's Hope, as well as, scholarships and gross motor equipment.

Homes Tour Success

This year's Christmas Homes Tour hosted by St. Christopher's by the Sea Episcopal church in Portland was alot of fun and a huge success with proceeds going to Hannah's Hope.

Although it didn't feel much like the Christmas season with the warm weather, it was perfect for touring homes in Portland. Along with the tour were the wonderful refreshments, silent auction and caroling.

Thanks goes to the many, many people who worked long and hard to put on this annual event. We certainly do appreciate it.

"Hannah's Hope" Visits the Farm

Robin's husband, Jeff Blue, invited the students at Hannah's Hope to visit the farm where he works. Staff and students traveled to Kingsville this past Friday to visit the farm. They toured the farm by truck which all the kids enjoyed. Then, they all got to see and pet the goats. Later, everyone went to McDonald's for lunch and play time. It must have been a fun trip as the students returned tired, but with smiles on their faces.

Homes Tour Fundraiser

St. Christopher's by the Sea Episcopal church in Portland will be hosting a Homes Tour THIS Saturday, December 3rd. The Homes Tour will be from 1:00-4:00. Tickets may be purchased for $7.00 at the church. Proceeds will benefit Hannah's Hope. Refreshments, a bake sale and silent auction will also be held in the church parish hall until 5:00. This event is sure to put you in the holiday spirit!

Hannah's Hope would like to thank the many, many people involved in putting on this event. We appreciate St. Christopher's taking us on as an outreach ministry. Several members from Gateway church in Gregory also contributed to the cause, as well as many people from the Portland community.
